Matt’s Weekend Selections – Part Two

International Football Tips

Part 2 Sunday 14th December

We had a mixed bag of luck on Saturday. On the whole though it was pretty good with just a few of my selections failing to win.

Bayer Leverkusen were the biggest disappointment of the day. They were in a prominent position in the league at the start of the day and the incentive of possibly ending the day at the top of the league should have been enough to inspire them to a victory. That certainly wasn’t the case and they let two vital points slip at home to a poor Cottbus side. Bayer did score mid way through the second half only to see their persistence undone by a last gasp equaliser. None of the three selections for this match came in so Bayer won’t be high up on our Christmas list this year.

Where do we start with the Hull City match. They were superb against a very good Liverpool and took the lead twice. Liverpool replied instantly but could only manager the draw. A result which could seriously dent their championship ambitions. The good news for us was that our tip of Over 2.5 goals came in very early on so it was easy money, so to speak.

Crystal Palace did do the business but it was hardly convincing. They had to come from behind to pick up all three points and didn’t score the winner until the 89th minute. That doesn’t bother us though. Just as long as they win.

There is less of a selection on offer for Sunday but we have a found a few potential gold mines.

Lyon V Marseille Sunday 20:00 (French Ligue 1)

Two of the strongest sides in French football go head-to-head this Sunday with the prize being the number one in the league for a week at least up for grabs. They are arguably the best two sides currently in the French top flight so a win will be the only acceptable result for both sides.

Lyon made an unsurprising good start to the season winning six of their opening seven league fixtures. They then hit a flat spot and dropped points in their following three league matches. They then won their next four and did exactly the same dropping more points in three consecutive matches. It would appear that they have hit yet another flat spot this season an Onoce more, they couldn’t of timed their poor run any worse with Marseille rapidly closing in on them. Fortunately for them they do posses a very strong home record winning six of their eight home matches with the other two ending in draws. They will also be delighted to welcome back both Karim Benzema and Juninho who have missed their recent games. A possible reason for their drop in form.

Marseille have also been without an influential figure in Niang and will have to battle on without him once again this Sunday. They still have the likes of Kone, Hatem Ben Afra and Valbuena who are a real handful for any defence. Marseille have had an issue with converting draws into wins away from home. Their away record this season is 3-5-0 so they will take the positive out of that in that they are undefeated on their travels so far but they have dropped too many points against inferior sides.

This is a tough match to predict a winner so i won’t even attempt doing so but one thing is for sure. Both teams will desperately want the win as it is potentially a six pointer. With that in mind we expect both teams to go all out for the win and hopefully hit the net several times.

Home win-draw-lose ratio: 6-2-0

Home goal scoring ratio: 16-6

Away win-draw-lose ratio: 3-5-0

Away goal scoring ratio: 14-8

Selection:

Over 2.5 Goals – 69/67 CanBet ST – 2

Hoffenheim V Schalke Sunday 16:00 (German Bundesliga)

Hoffenheim are like the Hull City of the Bundesliga, only a lot better. They have made a tremendous start to their season after gaining promotion last season. They have got the job done at home so far and hold a very strong home record of 7-1-0. The only side to have taken a point away from them at home was Stuttgart in a 0-0 draw. They are also on a run of six straight home wins so getting anything from their will be a massive challenge for any side in the Bundesliga.

That task has been given to Schalke and it is one they must achieve if they are to keep their already slim title hopes alive. Schalke haven’t made a good start to their season and currently 9th in the table. They are also very inconsistent away from home with an a way record of 2-3-3 this season. Schalke haven’t picked up any points on the road in their last two away fixtures but this is a must win match for Schalke. They are already nine points adrift so they cannot afford any more setbacks.

With this in mind we fancy Schalke to try their utmost to attain a victory but it will be tough. Hoffenheim won’t roll over and it is hard to not foresee the home side scoring a goal or two.
