Mechelen can leapfrog fifth placed Gent in the Belgian Jupiler League tonight to take advantage of the game in hand over them when they take on second from bottom strugglers Westerlo at their AFAS-stadion Achter de Kazerne.
Mechelen are currently enjoying a good run of results lately as they’ve strung together a five-match unbeaten run which includes four wins over Eupen, Mouscron, Waasland-Beveren and Sporting Charleroi, while their home form has been excellent in recent times.
A six-match winning streak on home turf has lifted them up into the top six and contention for a european qualifying spot, and they possess a strong looking home record of 7-1-3 16/9 ahead of this evening’s encounter with Westerlo.
Onto the visitors then, and as mentioned they sit second from bottom in the Belgian top flight despite registering a convincing 4-1 home win over Kortrijk last time out at their Het Kujpje ground which ended a run of 11 league matches without a win.
But whilst they managed to register a win at home, Westerlo’s away form and results continue to be cause for concern as they’ve now gone seven matches without success on their travels amidst an overall poor record that stands at 1-3-7 12/31.
A surprising 2-1 win at Anderlecht back in September was undoubtedly their best result on the road this season, but they’ve been unable to replicate that success since and they look set to struggle away at Mechelen in tonight’s clash. In addition, Westerlo have managed to keep just one clean sheet so far on the road this term.
