Mexico have emerged as one of the dark horses in Group A along with unfancied Bolivia as they go into the last group match tonight against bottom placed Ecuador.
Prior to the tournament starting, Mexico were touted as putting out their ‘B’ team as the priority for the national side was a strong outfit for the upcoming Gold Cup, but draws with Bolivia and most notably Chile in the recent exciting 3-3 draw have placed Mexico in third spot in the qualifying group.
Nevertheless, they are still two points adrift of surprise-package Bolivia so they must take all three points in this one to stand a real chance of progressing through to the knock-out stages. Forwards Vuoso and Jimenez did the damage against the host nation in their last match, and Miguel Herrera’s side have lost just twice in their last eight internationals.
Ecuador have been mightily disappointing in this year’s Copa America following back-to-back defeats to firstly Chile 2-0 and then a 3-2 loss to Bolivia who were tipped before the tournament began to be just making up the numbers in this four-team group.
Ecuador now go into tonight’s match looking to restore some pride as they currently sit bottom in Group A without a point to their name. They simply must win here tonight if they’re to stand any chance of claiming an entry into the knock-out rounds and hope that other results go their way as they’ll be one of the third place hopefuls.
However, a loss to tonight’s opponents Mexico at the end of March in a friendly 1-0 defeat could well be repeated tonight. I fancy Mexico to have enough about them here to at least avoid defeat but they could leapfrog second placed Bolivia with a narrow 1-0 win this evening.
