Group A is starting to take shape as expected, with Mexico and Portugal joint top of the group as we head into matchday 3 with Mexico taking on the hosts, Russia, at the Kazan Arena in what promises to be an interesting encounter.
Mexico have made a solid start to this Confederations Cup as they’ve picked up four points from their first two matches with a 2-2 draw against Portugal and a 2-1 win over bottom of the group, New Zealand.
The Mexicans have actually lost just once in their last 15 matches overall in all competitions, so they’ll head into tonight’s clash in confident mood although they’ve lost both previous meetings against Russia – albeit some 23 years ago! Look out for forwards Hernandez (Chicarito),Vela and Peralta here.
Hosts, Russia, sit in third spot in Group A behind Mexico and Portugal as they won their opening match in a 2-0 win over New Zealand, but then suffered a 1-0 defeat to the European Champions, Portugal in their previous match.
Nevertheless, they’ll be hopeful that they can get something out of this clash against Mexico with home advantage behind them, and with the added incentive that a win tonight would see them progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
However, the Russians cannot boast a similar solid run of results as Mexico, and it’s this lack of consistency which has cost the home side in the past.
To sum up, I believe Mexico have the better quality and so I’ll back them with the well priced handicap here.
