Middlesbrough extended their impressive unbeaten run in the Championship to six matches when they secured what could be a vital three points away at fellow promotion hopefuls Brighton prior to Christmas in a 3-0 win at the Amex Stadium.
Middlesbrough were scheduled to play Blackburn Rovers away at Ewood Park on Boxing Day but the match was postponed and instead they entertain Sheffield Wednesday at the Riverside Stadium as the hosts look to chalk up another three points in their bid for automatic promotion back up to the Premier League.
Karanka’s side are second and just one pojnt adrift of Derby County who lead the Championship, but Boro could overtake them at the top if they win today as Derby play Leeds United at Elland Road on Tuesday night.
Visitors Sheffield Wednesday secured back-to-back wins in the Championship on Boxing Day with a convincing 3-0 home win over Birmingham City at Hillsborough which followed a 4-1 win over another west midlands outfit, Wolves the match previous.
Wednesday have moved up to 7th place in the league table, but it should be noted that the major factor in this league position has been their solid form at Hillsborough where they’ve suffered just one defeat all season. However, The Owls away record stands at a more modest 2-5-4 13/17 and they’re without an away from their last four on the road.
Recent defeats at Charlton Athletic and MK Dons show they are very vulnerable on their travels, and could well struggle again at Middlesbrough this evening.
Middlesbrough have won eight of their 11 home matches to date and I’ll back them to register their ninth today.
