AS Monaco had set the new French Ligue 1 season alight with a run of four league wins on the trot and were top of the division prior to a heavy 4-0 defeat away at Nice during the week, but they have home advantage behind them here on Saturday night at their Stade Louis II when they take on Angers.
Monaco had earlier strung together an impressive four wins on the trot in the first few weeks of the new French domestic season with wins over Nantes, PSG, Lille and Rennes and the nature of the wins was equally impressive as they scored a total of 11 goals and conceded just 2 in reply during this sequence.
Home form is also impressive for tonight’s hosts as they’ve suffered just one defeat in Ligue 1 from their last 19 played on home soil, along with a 1-0 win over tonight’s opponents Angers in their last encounter here last season.
Onto Angers now, and they have made a reasonable start to their new Ligue 1 campaign as they sit in a comfortable mid-table position following three straight wins recently against Dijon, Bordeaux and Caen.
However, two of these wins were recorded at home (and against bottom half opposition), so their visit to Monaco on Saturday night will be a real test of how far they’ve actually come and could be a reality-check for the visitors here.
Just four away wins from their last 15 on the road indicates that they may well struggle at Monaco this evening, and prior to their recent win at Bordeaux, Angers had failed to score in each of their previous four matches on their travels.
