Monaco certainly raised a few eyebrows in last week’s Champions League quarter-final first leg when they recorded a 3-2 win away at Borussia Dortmund to hand the French club the advantage ahead of this second leg on Wednesday night.
Monaco now hold home advantage at their Stade Louis II ground where they’ll be seeking to avoid defeat to move into the semi-finals of the Champions League. Monaco have flown under the radar somewhat during this year’s competition until they emerged from the group stages (where they topped Group E) and secured a convincing 3-1 home win over Manchester City in the round of 16.
On home soil, Monaco have won three of their four home matches to date in this campaign, and with the likes of midfielders Moutinho and Silva in the engine room along with a rejuvenated Falcao up front supported by Germain, Monaco could progress even further.
Visitors Borussia Dortmund find themselves trailing by a one goal margin following a disappointing 3-2 defeat by Monaco in the first leg in Dortmund last week, and their journey in this year’s Champions League is now under serious threat as they make their way to Monaco for this second leg.
Dortmund suffered defeat last time out on their travels when they went down 1-0 away at Portuguese side Benfica in the round of 16, but they bounced back in emphatic style in the second leg, winning 4-0 back in Germany.
However, I do feel that Dortmund missed a trick in last week’s home defeat as home form has been extremely important for this German outfit, and it now remains to be seen whether their prolific striker Aubameyang (26 goals) can help turn things around here.
I fancy Monaco to avoid defeat here and progress into the semi-finals.
