French side Monaco find themselves chasing down a 2-goal deficit when they take on Premier League outfit Manchester City in this Champions League round of 16 second leg at their Stade Louis II following last month’s 5-3 first leg loss.
That loss in Manchester last month was Monaco’s second defeat away from home on the trot in the Champions League where they’d previously held a pretty solid record on the road at this level, putting together an eight-match unbeaten run.
Since the defeat to Manchester, Monaco have also registered four wins on the trot on the domestic front with Ligue 1 wins gained over Guingamp, Nantes and Bordeaux, along with a Coupe de France extra-time win away at Marseille.
Incidentally, Monaco are unbeaten in their last eight home matches in the Champions League which includes six wins.
Visitors Manchester City will need to be switched on for the full ninety minutes in this second leg away at Monaco as I daresay the french outfit will throw everything but the kitchen sink at them as the hosts look to overhaul this 2-goal deficit.
But Manchester City themselves are enjoying an 11-match unbeaten sequence in all competitions as they’ve been quietly going about their business, both domestically in the Premier League and the Champions League.
However, a glance at City’s results away from home at this level suggests they could be in for a nervous time in France as they’ve won just three away matches from their last nine on the road, and this will be their first foray into Monaco in all competitions.
To sum up, I just can’t see Manchester City keeping a clean sheet here, and Monaco’s record historically on home turf has been solid for some time.
