New Zealand find themselves bottom of Group A in the Confederations Cup following two defeats on the trot to Russia 2-0 and Mexico 2-1 respectively, and they now face a strong Portugal outfit which contains their deadly weapon, Cristiano Ronaldo.
New Zealand have lost their last four matches in all competitions as they’d previously lost to Northern Ireland and Belarus 1-0 on both occasions, so they’re expected to have their work cut out this evening as they look to claw back some dignity, despite bowing out of the Confederations Cup following this match.
The Kiwi’s possess striker Chris Wood who has scored goals on a regular basis in the English Championship, and he represents their best chance of trying to keep up with this impressive Portuguese outfit. Please note, New Zealand have failed to score in three of their last four though.
Portugal sit level on points with Mexico at the top of Group A as they head into this encounter where they need just a point in order to qualify for the knockout stages. It’s very unlikely, however, that this side that contains the likes of Ronaldo, will settle for just a point against one of the weakest sides in this competition.
Portugal are unbeaten in their last four matches in which they’ve won three with wins gained over Cyprus 4-0, Latvia 3-0 and a 1-0 win over Russia. Against Russia, they came up against a stubborn home nation that were desperate to perform in front of their home crowd, but New Zealand don’t possess the same quality.
This will be the first ever meeting between these two sides, and I’m expecting Ronaldo to create and receive a lot more space to operate in tonight, and the consequences could be devastating.
