Newcastle United backed up their point away at Old Trafford last Saturday with a 4-1 thumping of League Two outfit Northampton Town in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night, but The Magpies have a tough assignment ahead of them this lunchtime despite holding home advantage at St James’ Park.
Newcastle held out for ninety minutes in a stoic display away at Manchester United where they earned a point in a 0-0 draw, and they could even have nicked all three points as they spurned a couple of great chances. At the other end, they had Dutch keeper Tim Kruhl to thank for keeping them in the game, but they’ll need to start putting their chances away up front if they’re to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle again this season.
New signing Mitrovic (from Anderlecht) looked a handful up front, and he also possessed a useful aerial threat for the Magpies on occasion, but they will need to continue to tighten up in defence and make St James’ a fortress as opposed to last season’s inconsistent results on home turf.
Visitors Arsenal were also involved in a 0-0 stalemate on Monday night when they had to make do with a point against Liverpool at The Emirates Stadium. It inevitably turned out to be a war of attrition between two teams that are expected to be vying for European places come May, but The Gunners can make amends this afternoon in Newcastle.
Arsenal actually started their new Premier League season with a shock defeat at home to London rivals West Ham in a 2-0 loss, but they quickly bounced back with a 2-1 win against another London club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
With a wealth of attacking talent amongst their personnel, Arsenal boast riches such as Sanchez, Giroud and Walcott who are all capable of being matchwinners in their own rights.
To sum up, I believe Arsenal can take all three points here as they possess the greater guile and attacking flair than their hosts – take the -1 asian line with the visitors here as they can perhaps win this one 2-0.
