Football – England – Championship Betting Tips

A win this evening for hosts Newcastle United at St James’ Park against mid-table Preston North End will confirm their automatic promotion back up to the Premier League and it would be mission accomplished for manager Rafa Benitez.

However, a lean run of results in The Magpies’ last three league matches has resulted in them losing ground upon Championship leaders Brighton and they find themselves seven points adrift of The Seagulls as a result of defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town along with taking just a point at home to Leeds United.

It should be noted though that the recent defeats to Wednesday and Ipswich were both inflicted away from home, while Newcastle hold an overall home record of  13-3-5  42/22 while their record at home against top half teams stands at  6-1-3  19/12.

Visitors Preston North End have seemingly nothing to play for as they make their way to the north-east, 15 points adrift of the play-off pack but a comfortable 16 points above the relegation zone, but they could make things very difficult for an expectant St James Park ground this evening.

Preston could play the role of party pooper if they prevent Newcastle from taking all three points this evening, but although they’ve been impressive at their Deepdale ground this season, their results away from home have failed to match their exploits on home turf so far this term.

Preston’s away record stands at  5-8-8  23/32 and they come into this match having lost their last three Championship matches on the trot with defeats to Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Norwich City. In addition, Preston hold a poor record away from home at top half opposition with stats of  0-3-6  7/20.

This last statistic leads me to believe that Newcastle can finally get over the line here, despite winning just twice in their last eight in the Championship.
