NEWPORT v PLYMOUTH – Pick: X – 26 December 2014

Exiles and Pilgrims keen to stay in play-off mix

League One/Two Tips

Football – England – League Two

Friday 26th December 2014 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

Newport County crashed to a 3-0 defeat away at play-off rivals Luton Town on Saturday and although they return to Rodney Parade for Boxing Day, they face another tough match against fifth placed Plymouth Argyle.

Newport will no doubt be hoping that their solid form on home turf keeps them out of trouble this afternoon and that they can revert back to the sort of form they showed prior to the Luton match where they’d strung together a nine-match unbeaten run. With a home record of  5-4-1  18/11 there’s every chance that The Exiles will get something from this match.

Newport are also nine matches unbeaten at Rodney Parade having won five of their last seven with wins over Northampton Town, AFC Wimbledon, York City, Southend United and Stevenage.

Visitors Plymouth Argyle cruised to a 3-0 home win over struggling Dagenham & Redbridge to maintain their play-off hopes and another win today could see them draw level on points with Shrewsbury Town, luton Town and Burton Albion.

However, The Pilgrims know they have their work cut out to get all three points today as Newport have proven to be a very hard nut to crack at their Rodney Parade ground, while Plymouth’s away results have been a mixed bag in recent weeks.

Recent wins at Tranmere Rovers and Northampton Town were achieved against clubs fighting it out near the bottom of the division, while being held at AFC Wimbledon and Burton Albion in 0-0 and 1-1 draws respectively.

Neither side will want to give up the three points here, and I’m expecting a pretty tense and well-fought encounter where both teams have a high chance of cancelling each other out. I’ll go for the draw here, perhaps 1-1.
