Estonian side Nomme Kalju will take on Faroe Islands outfit B36 Torshavn at their Hiiu staadion on Thursday night with the hosts looking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat away at Flora Tallinn in the Estonian Meistriliiga.
Prior to that defeat, Nomme Kalju had been amongst the goals in a big way as they smashed 13 past Vilmsi B in a 13-0 cup win, and then hit Sillamae Kalev 8-0 in the league the game after. They currently sit in third spot in the Estonian top flight and hold a valuable nine point lead over fourth placed Flora Tallinn for the last remaining Europa League spot for next season.
Nomme Kalju made it through to the third qualifying round of the Europa League last season as they beat Lithuanian side Trakai 5-3 on aggregate, and then produced one of the shocks of the second qualifying round when they beat Maccabi Haifa on penalties.
Visitors B36 Torshavn have also been amongst the goals recently as they registered a 5-1 win at Ki and a 2-1 win at EB/Streymur, which will give them confidence ahead of their trip over to Estonia on Thursday night.
B36’s away form has been pretty solid as well this season as they’ve suffered just one defeat so far from their eight outings to date. They will therefore be desperate to transfer this season’s form into their foray into the Europa League, but past history in this competition is against them.
B36 are without a win from their last 10 matches at this level, and indeed, have managed just one win throughout their total of 16 Europa League matches which was a 2-1 win over IBV back in 2005!
Nomme Kalju should therefore possess too much firepower for B36 here.
