Football – England – Conference Premier

Saturday 6th December 2014 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

In a non-league weekend that has been largely disrupted by the Conference teams’ involvement in the second round of the FA Cup, strugglers Nuneaton Town and Alfreton Town will fight it out for an all-important three points at the bottom of the division.

Taking a look at Nuneaton first, and the midlanders have registered just one league win from their last eight which was a 3-2 home win over Chester FC last Saturday. It’s been a frustrating campaign so far for Liam Daish’s men as they find themselves third from bottom in the Conference after last season’s solid season upon their return to the non-league top flight.

Nuneaton’s home record stands at  5-2-4  16/18 but there are signs of improvement on home turf as they’ve lost just once in their last five matches, whilst securing wins over Lincoln City, Dover Athletic and Chester. Interestingly, 8 of their 11 home matches so far have resulted in both teams scoring.

Visitors Alfreton Town travel down to the midlands on the back of five league matches without a win  following defeats against Dover Athletic, Macclesfield Town, Halifax Town and Gateshead, but they did manage to hold high-flying Bristol Rovers to a point in a 0-0 draw at the Impact Arena.

On the road it doesn’t get much better for the Derbyshire outfit as their record stands at a poor  2-0-10  5/25 but they have scored 5 goals in the 4 matches at bottom half opposition so far this season.

Likely goalscorers for the visitors are midfielder Shaw (5 goals) along with forwards Clayton and Hawley (3 goals apiece).

Nuneaton have kept just one clean sheet at home all season while Alfreton certainly possess the personnel to score at least one goal against the third from bottom club. I therefore think that both teams will score here today in what could perhaps be a 2-1 win for the hosts, but it’ll be a scrappy affair!
