My last pick for the group matches on match day six in the Champions League features Arsenal as they look to claim a place in the final 16 of the competition when they make the difficult trip to Greece on Wednesday night.
Olympiakos currently sit second in Group F behind German champions Bayern Munich with a home match pending against Arsenal who they beat 3-2 away from home at The Emirates Stadium back at the end of September.
Since then, Olympiakos have registered back-to-back wins over bottom club Dinamo Zagreb to sit in the box seat for a place in the last 16 of the Champions League, knowing just a draw tonight will get them through.
Visitors Arsenal have stumbled around the group matches so far as they’ve registered wins over Dinamo Zagreb and most notably, a 2-0 home win over Bayern Munich. Aside from those results though, there’s been little for the Gunners’ fans to cheer for as they’ve already lost to tonight’s opponents Olympiakos, Dinamo Zagreb and suffered a 5-1 humiliation away at Bayern Munich as the German outfit exacted their revenge.
Back-to-back away defeats then in Zagreb and Munich don’t exactly fill me with much confidence for a straight Arsenal win tonight despite motivation that suggests otherwise, and with Arsenal going well domestically in the Premier League (they’re currently second in the league), manager Arsene Wenger has to balance european ambitions with a serious challenge for the English title.
I reckon there’s enough about Olympiakos tonight to back them for at least a draw here tonight, particularly when you consider they beat Arsenal away from home earlier in the campaign.
