Olympiakos take their place in the third round qualifying round of the Champions League following their capture of a 43rd Super League title in Greece, which they won at a canter and by a massive margin of 30 points ahead of second placed Panathinaikos.
Olympiakos lost just one league match throughout the whole of their Super League campaign, and they will be hoping to extend their dominance on home turf in this crucial Champions League tie with Be’er Sheva, starting tonight at their Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki in Piraeus.
Olympiakos finished in third place in last season’s Group F which also consisted of Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb and tonight’s hosts recorded wins against Arsenal (away) and Dinamo Zagreb (home and away).
Visitors Hapoel Be’er Sheva progressed through to the third qualifying round of the Champions League following a 3-2 aggregate win over Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova, but this could be wehere their fairytale ends at this level as they face the Greek giants Olympiakos in their own back-yard in this first leg.
The previous round was the first time that Hapoel Be’er Sheva had entered the Champions League and their vast inexperience (compared to that of Olympiakos) could well show in this opening leg – having said that, Be’er Sheva are unbeaten in their last four on their travels with wins at Slask Wroclaw, Pogon and Ruch Chorzow along with a 0-0 draw away at Sheriff.
In short, I’m fully expecting an Olympiakos home win here tonight, and I’ll also back that they will dominate early in the game.
