Palmeiras registered a very useful 2-0 away win at mid-table Ponte Preta on Sunday which earned them a third straight win in the Brazilian top flight, and in turn lifted them up into 7th place in Serie A.
They now return to the familiar surroundings of their Allianz Parque ground when they entertain bottom half outfit Avai as they go in search of another three points which could lift them up into Copa Libertadores qualification contention.
Previous home wins over Sao Paulo 4-0 and Chapecoense 2-0 have cemented their home form which now stands at 3-2-1 11/5 having earlier recorded a 2-1 win over fourth placed Fluminense, while their attacking threat is expected to come from the likes of Marques (4 goals), Cristaldo (3 goals) along with attacking midfielder Dudu who bagged a brace at Ponte Preta in the last match.
Visitors Avai were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw at home with Sport Recife at the weekend, but that result means that the visitors have now gone five Serie A matches without a win, a run which has seen them drop down to 13th in the league table.
Avai’s away record is actually marginally better than their home form (by one point) with an overall record of 2-1-2 4/4 which includes wins at Goias and Coritiba but both of these scalps were achieved against teams situated in the bottom five of Serie A, while they’ve also lost to bottom half clubs Internacional and Vasco da Gama.
Avai’s form on their travels therefore is a little inconsistent and they’ve won just twice in their last 14 away matches at this level which is a record that extends into their last appearance in Serie A which was back in 2011.
To sum up, the hosts Palmeiras are pushing for Copa Libertadores qualification and with home advantage behind them, I’ll back them to cover the -1 asian line here in what could be a solid 2-0 win for the home side.
