A 2-0 win away at Corinthians last weekend maintained Palmeiras’ push for the Brazilian Serie A title, and they now sit top of the division but hold a slender one-point lead ahead of second placed Flamengo who have now emerged as their closest rivals.
Palmeiras are now unbeaten in their last nine matches in the Brazilian top flight overall which includes wins over Vitoria, Atletico PR, Fluminense, Sao Paulo and the aforementioned Corinthians.
The hosts now return to their Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo as they prepare for the visit of Coritiba, and the home side have posted a very solid home record thus far this season which stands at 9-3-1 28/11 which includes five clean sheets along with failing to score just once this season.
Visitors Coritiba sit in 13th place but their recent 1-0 win away at Sport Recife pulled them away from immediate relegation danger and now sit five points ahead of Figueirense who occupy the last relegation spot.
Coritiba have lost just once in their last eight Serie A matches overall which was a 1-0 defeat away at Chapecoense, but although they’ve put together this decent run, most of their success continues to be at their Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira.
Coritiba have managed just two away wins in the Brazilian top flight all season which were achieved at second from bottom club Santa Cruz and bottom half outfit Sport Recife, and although they did manage to beat tonight’s hosts Palmeiras at the end of last season 2-0, I can’t see them repeating this feat on Saturday afternoon.
