Seventh placed Palmeiras will be looking to extend their impressive five-match unbeaten run this afternoon when they play host to lowly Santos in the Brazilian Serie A.
Palmeiras have recently registered wins over Sao Paulo, Chapecoense, Ponte Preta and Avai along with a creditable point away at Sport Recife last weekend in a 2-2 draw. What is impressive is that these results were recorded against top half teams (with the exception of bottom half club Avai), while Palmeiras’ overall home record reads a solid 4-2-1 14/5.
Palmeiras are also unbeaten in their last five at their Allianz Parque ground having racked up four wins on the trot. This impressive form has lifted them up into seventh place in Serie A, and they’ve also kept three clean sheets on the trot on home soil.
Visitors Santos recorded a much-needed victory last weekend with a 3-0 home win over Figueirense which ended a poor run of four defeats on the trot which has meant that the visitors remain in the bottom four of the Brazilian top flight.
However, this recent win was recorded on home turf where they’ve lost just once all season to date, but their away results have been less consistent as they’re still yet to register a win on their travels.
An away record of 0-2-5 7/14 tells its own story as Santos have struggled on their travels all season with just stalemates at Abai and Atletico Mineiro to show for their troubles, taking just two points from a possible 21 on offer.
This therefore leads me to the conclusion that the hosts, Palmeiras, are in much better shape than Santos to take the points here, but I recommend giving the quarter-ball on Palmeiras who should nevertheless take three points in perhaps a 2-1 win.
