Palmeiras lost last weekend in a 1-0 defeat at Gremio, but despite facing second placed Sao Paulo this afternoon, the hosts have reason to believe they can get something from this match.
Sao Paulo proved to be human after all last week when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home with Avai which put an abrupt end to their 100% record on home turf, and today’s hosts Palmeiras will also be looking to take something from their opponents today as they’ve lost just once in their last five at home.
Palmeiras hold a 1-2-1 5/5 record going into today’s encounter having beaten Fluminense last time out along with draws against Atletico MG and Internacional. Their one defeat so far this season was to unpredictable Goias.
Sao Paulo will be viewing last week’s 1-1 draw with Avai as two points most certainly dropped and the single point they did earn will be scant reward for the second placed club who now have to travel to Palmeiras and play ‘catch-up’.
The visitors have been very impressive at home so far, winning four of their first five matches but on their travels they’ve been less dominant as they’ve shared out a win, draw and defeat in equal measure thus far amidst an overall away record of 1-1-1 1/1.
Scoring goals on the road has been a bit of a chore for Sao Paulo as they’ve scored just once in their last four away matches, and this has prevented them from sitting on top of Serie A as they surrendered top position to Sport Recife last weekend.
With goals at a premium for the visitors this could play nicely into my pick for the hosts with the round ball here as I fancy them to at least avoid defeat, if not perhaps edge this one 1-0.
