We have now entered the final phase of the Greek domestic top flight season as the Europa League/Champions League play-offs have already begun.
Three of the four-team group will progress through to european action next season with one unlucky loser, and tonight’s hosts Panathinaikos will be desperate to ensure that unlucky team isn’t them when they play host to AEK at their Stadio Apóstolos Nikolaidis tonight.
Panathinaikos have started their play-off campaign with back-to-back draws against Panionios and PAOK, with an early record of 0-2-0 2/2. Visitors AEK have started the play-off phase with a defeat and a win so far in their opening two matches; a 2-1 loss away at PAOK along with a 1-0 home win over Panionios, and they face another tough away trip this evening at Panathinaikos, especially when you consider their away form.
AEK Athens finished up the regular season with a fairly disappointing away record of 4-6-5 12/15 and upon closer inspection, you’ll see that AEK have now gone seven away matches without a win in the Super League, scoring just 2 goals and conceding a total of 8 goals in reply during this seven-game sequence.
