Following their recent 2-0 win away at Panionios, tonight’s hosts PAOK now sit top of the Champions League/Europa League play-off table with Panathinaikos as they go in search of extending their unbeaten run in this play-off phase.
Two wins and a draw have been PAOK’s return so far in a successful run in the play-offs with wins over AEK Athens 2-1 and Panionios 2-0 along with a 1-1 stalemate against Panathinaikos, but they’ll also be heartened by the fact that two of these positive results were achieved away from home.
PAOK’s home record during the regular season finished on 9-4-2 24/12 while their overall record during the play-offs currently stands at 2-1-0 5/2 and level on points with Panathinaikos. However, they have the chance of pulling clear here tonight.
Onto Panionios, and they’ve become the early ‘whipping boys’ of this play-off group having been dealt two defeats and gaining just a draw in their first three play-off matches as they sit bottom of the table with just one point to their name.
The visitors head in to tonight’s encounter on the back of a miserable five-match sequence without a win in the Greek top flight, having lost four of their last five matches overall. Defeats to AEK and Atromitos at the end of the regular season has been further compounded by defeats to AEK (again) and PAOK during the play-off phase.
Away from home, Panionios have won just once in their last 11 matches and it’s difficult to see how they can avoid another defeat on the road here this evening.
