Paraguay and Jamaica meet tonight in Antofagasta as the Paraguayans look to build upon their impressive point against Argentina in their opening group match.
Paraguay fought back well against the highly fancied Argentinians in a 2-2 draw despite finding themselves 2-0 down in the first half. That result has now thrown Group B wide open, and if Paraguay take the points against Jamaica tonight, they will sit in the box seat to progress from the group to the knock-out stages.
Paraguay are likely to keep to an unchanged line-up following that result against Argentina but forward Lucas Barrios is staking a claim for a starting place following his dramatic equaliser, and he may well replace veteran striker Santa Cruz up front.
Jamaica also showed promise against Uruguay in their opening Group B match but they still ended up on the losing side as they went down 1-0 to the more experienced side.
As a result, the Jamaicans sit bottom of the group and they’ll be hoping to earn at least a point here tonight in order to keep their hopes alive. If they do manage a draw, then they’ll be up against Argentina in their final group match where the chances of them springing a surprise seem almost impossible.
Tonight’s match then becomes an all-important clash for both sides, and left midfielder Lance Laing may well replace Simon Dawkins on the flanks following a good second half for the Reggaeboyz.
Paraguay know what they must do tonight in order to progress out of the group, and given their confidence-boosting draw against Argentina along with a better international pedigree and know-how, I’ll back Paraguay for the win here tonight.
