Sixth placed PAS Giannina will no doubt be relieved to be returning to their Stadio Zosimades ground for Wednesday evening’s encounter with second placed Panionios following a run of four Greek Super League matches away from home on the trot!
A win, two draws and a loss was their return on their travels as they registered a 1-0 win at PAOK, stalemates at AEK Athens and tonight’s opponents Panionios respectively, but defeat at third placed Xanthi – but not a bad return considering three of these four opponents currently occupy the top five positions of the Super League.
Back at home, PAS Giannina hold a reasonable record of 3-2-2 10/4 having gained wins over Atromitos, Larissa and Veria and they have the added incentive to get something from this match in order to stake a claim for a possible Champions League play-off spot.
Visitors Panionios sit in second place behind runaway Greek Super League leaders Olympiakos but nevertheless, it’s been an excellent campaign for tonight’s visitors as they look likely to be involved in a Champions League qualifying play-off.
Panionios have strung together an eight-match unbeaten streak in the Greek top flight which has helped them to the lofty heights of the Super League and recent back-to-back away wins at Panaitolikos and Atromitos 2-0 and 2-1 respectively, will have strengthened their claims for european football next season.
Panionios’ away record stands at a solid 5-2-1 13/6 and they’ve won their last three away matches on the trot, so a visit to Giannina won’t hold any particular demons for them I suspect.
