Following their unexpected 2-0 defeat away at Fluminense on Wednesday night, Ponte Preta will be desperate to make amends in front of their home fans this afternoon when they entertain third placed Atletico Paranaense.
Ponte Preta had looked good for at least a point for the most of the match at Flu but they eventually lost 2-0 to hand them their first defeat in eight matches. This result means they’ve now dropped down to 8th place, but with a reasonable looking home record of 2-1-0 4/1 behind them (including a win over second placed Sao Paulo already), they will be looking to bounce back here today.
The hosts’ other win was a 3-1 victory over Chapecoense along with a 0-0 draw with Goais, and they’ve suffered just two defeats in their last nine matches on home turf.
Atletico PR were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Coritiba last Sunday but as with Sao Paulo, I daresay they’ll be kicking themselves for letting two almost guaranteed points slip away as Coritiba earned their first point of the season on the road with that result.
The visitors now travel to Ponte Preta having experienced defeat last time out on their travels as they went down 2-1 at the hands of Gremio in what has been a mixed return of results away from home thus far.
An earlier 2-0 defeat at Goais was levelled up with a 2-1 win at struggling Joinville but they still seem to be susceptible away from their Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães ground as they carry an overall away record of 1-0-2 3/5 into today’s match.In fact, they’ve chalked up just four away wins from their last eighteen away matches in Serie A.
I believe Ponte Preta will be motivated enough to bounce back here this afternoon to claim all three points, while Atletico PR’s away form has been sketchy to say the least. Home win here, perhaps 2-1.
