Premiership: Liverpool v Chelsea

Premiership
Liverpool (7th) v Chelsea (1st)
Sunday 2nd May 2010 – 1330hrs
It’s off to Anfield for Liverpool’s final home game of this Premiership season, and I couldn’t pass up  writing a preview for this one now could I!
The Reds season is now hanging by a fragile thread and they now have two matches left to retain some pride, perhaps cling on to that fourth position spot, but more importantly, ensure that the red half of Merseyside comes out on top in terms of final league positions.
Sadly, it’s been the away form that has let Liverpool down this season, as their home form has been terrific – 13-3-2 43/13, and they have now gone ten games without defeat at home, which includes a run of eight straight wins on the trot. A 0-0 draw against Fulham has temporarily interrupted their rich vein of form at home, and it’s the only match at home so far that Liverpool have failed to score. Of their 18 home matches, 12 have resulted over 2.5 goals in total.
Even without Torres, Liverpool have the armoury to score goals with no problem; Steven Gerrard (9goals,7assists), Dirk Kuyt (9goals,3assists), the bustling midfielder Yossi Benayoun (6goals,4assists) and the rather irritating David Ngog (5goals) can all do damage.
The Anfield faithful will expect their lads to bounce back from their European exit and take the game to visitors Chelsea.
Onto Chelsea then, and they too have recorded 12 out of their 18 matches away from home resulting in over 2.5 goals. And they too have only drawn one blank so far (0-0 at Birmingham City). A crucial game for The Blues though as they look to extend their lead at the top, depending on Manchester United’s result at Sunderland later in the afternoon.
It’s certainly in their hands, but a draw won’t be enough for them here and I expect an open, attacking display from both sides for different reasons. Chelsea’s away form stands at 9-4-5 33/18, and if anything is a slight disappointment for them this term.
However, it’s goals I’m concentrating on here in this one, and Chelsea demolished Stoke City last weekend 7-0 (not an easy feat against a usually solid Stoke side), and with players like Didier Drogba (25goals,10assists), midfielder Frank Lampard (20goals,12assists) and Florent Malouda (12goals,7assists) they have every chance of creating a goal-scoring opportunity every time they go forward – and generally do!
Anyhow, I like the odds on offer again with the promise of goals (I hope).
