Premiership: Wigan Athletic v Hull City

Wigan Athletic (16th) v Hull City (18th)
Monday 3rd May 2010 – 1330hrs
It’s the battle of the basement dwellers again this weekend as hosts Wigan entertain virtually relegated Hull City at their DW Stadium on Monday afternoon.
I say virtually relegated as Hull need to win their last two games, and score at least 24 goals in the process whilst banking on West Ham losing both of their matches and not scoring a goal! So, let’s face it, it’s gonna be Championship football next season for The Tigers.
What surprises me about this fixture are the odds currently on offer – on face value if you looked at the league table there’s only two positions and six points separating these two teams, but when I delve a bit deeper into recent form, then you’ll understand my pick for today.
Wigan have lost only one of their last five home matches which was a 1-2 reverse against Aston Villa, but in this good timely run they have beaten Liverpool 1-0, helped relegate their rivals Burnley 1-0 and then staged a dramatic comeback to beat Arsenal 3-2 in a thriller! The Latics overall home record reads 6-6-6 17/22, with ever-present forward Hugo Rodallega (10goals,4assists) leading the scoring charts, backed up by midfielder Charles N’Zogbia (5goals,6assists).
Things just couldn’t look worse for Hull City as they travel yet again looking for that elusive Premiership away win – they remain the only side yet to record a victory on the road and I can’t see that record changing this week either.
The Tigers away record stands at a miserable 0-5-13 10/44, and while they don’t have the worst away record (Burnley have only managed 4 points away from home), this will be scant consolation. To make matters worse, they have only managed 10 goals on their travels, with only Stoke City scoring fewer (9). In addition, their defence has shipped 44 goals, and this will be determining factor I feel in today’s fixture.
Stephen Hunt (6goals,4assists) is their main hope, while Tigers fans will be expecting a better display from midfielder Jimmy Bullard (5goals) this week.
Based on recent form I reckon the bookies are being a tad generous with their prices, but I’m not going to argue with them – I’ll take the 1.82 with Pinnacle Sports thankyou very much!
