Onto Group D in the Champions League and a look at how PSV Eindhoven’s chances stack up against Russian outfit Rostov when the two teams clash on Matchday 6 at the Philips Stadion on Tuesday night with a winner-takes-all claim for a Europa League place.
PSV find themselves bottom of the group with just one point to their name following a disastrous Champions League campaign which has seen them lose four of their first five group matches to date; defeats to Atletico Madrid (home and away) along with losses to Bayern Munich (on home turf and on the road) has meant the hosts are now fighting for an outside chance at Europa League football.
However, they stand a good chance of getting something out of this encounter against Rostov who they managed to take a point off away from home in a 2-2 draw earlier in the campaign, so they’re expected to press forward with home advantage this evening.
Visitors Rostov know they just need to avoid defeat in order to qualify for the Europa League but to start off with the mindset of playing fro a draw is a very dangerous game to play indeed, and not one I’m expecting them to deploy here.
Instead, I’m anticipating that they’ll look to absorb the pressure from the home side and then exploit their hosts with counter-attacks. In their limited Champions League experience, Rostov have managed to score in three of their four away matches to date at this level, achieving a 2-0 win at Anderlecht and a 1-1 draw at Ajax (in the qualifying stages), along with a goal against Atletico Madrid in a 2-1 defeat.
I fancy both teams to score here in a cut-and-thrust encounter.
