Racing Club will be looking to bounce back from a heavy 3-0 defeat away at Newell’s Old Boys last weekend when they play host to bottom half club Sarmiento in Saturday night’s clash in the Argentinian Primera Division.
Prior to last week’s loss, Racing Club had racked up three straight wins with victories over Independiente, Aldosivi and Velez Sarsfield and had actually been unbeaten in the first weeks of the new season. In fact, Racing Club have lost just once in their last 15 matches in the top flight while they hold a very good home record.
Racing Club’s overall home record stands at 7-0-1 16/4 with much of their success so far on home turf being attributed to a very mean defensive unit which has kept four clean sheets to date. Incidentally, Racing Club have won seven matches on the trot on home soil.
Visitors Sarmiento currently sit in 21st place in the Primera Division and they’ve gone six matches without a win overall in recent weeks. Last week’s 1-0 loss at home to Boca Juniors (whilst understandable), will have done their confidence no good at all as they make the trip to Racing Club for tonight’s encounter.
To make matters worse, Sarmiento have failed to score in each of their last six matches as well while their overall away record stands at 2-3-2 7/6. The visitors have lost two of their last three on the road with defeats at Godoy Cruz and San Lorenzo, but they picked up a point at Banfield in a 0-0 draw last time out on their travels.
Racing Club’s dominant home form should see them through here to take the three points, and given Sarmiento’s recent lean goalscoring spell, I’ll back Racing Club to also cover the asian handicap too. Could be a 2-0 win for the hosts.
