The Austrian Bundesliga season comes to a close this afternoon, and my next pick features two teams situated in the bottom half of the division with hosts, Rapid Vienna, taking on second from bottom club St Polten, who are looking to avoid last-day relegation.
Rapid Vienna have had a disappointing campaign by their standards as they currently sit mid-table in the Austrian top flight which is the result of too many inconsistent results both home and away, although they do come into this last game of the season in reasonable shape having registered back-to-back wins over Sturm Graz and Mattersburg respectively.
Rapid Vienna’s home record stands at 8-4-5 27/11 and they’ve won three of their last four on home turf, and I’m confident that they’ll be keen to end their season on a positive note here today.
Visitors St Polten face a very nervous 90 minutes in Vienna as they have to travel away from home on the last day of this season, while bottom club, Ried, have a home match against fellow strugglers Mattersburg.
With a superior goal difference (by 4 goals), St Polten just need to avoid defeat here this afternoon, even if Ried do take all three points, but each of the bottom two teams’ futures could swing either way throughout the next 90 minutes of their respective games.
St Polten come into this game on a three-match unbeaten run which includes a 1-0 home win over Mattersburg which was followed with back-to-back 1-1 draws against Ried and Wolfsberger respectively. However, they may well have to do it the hard way as their away record stands at a below average 4-4-9 16/25.
