The first leg of this Championship semi-final play-off ended up all square 1-1 at Craven Cottage, and now Reading appear to have the slight advantage being at their Madejski Stadium for this evening’s second leg decider.
Reading will have been delighted to avoid defeat away at free-scoring Fulham last week particularly as they’d recently suffered defeats at Norwich City 7-1 and 3-2 at Nottingham Forest on their travels, and they’ll now be hoping to register a fifth consecutive win on home turf tonight.
Prior to the play-offs, Reading ended their season at home in strong fashion as they racked up wins over Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic, and they also beat Fulham earlier in the year with a 1-0 win back in January.
Royals forwards Kermorgant (18 goals) and McCleary (9 goals) are the danger men in attack for the hosts.
Fulham will now look to their attacking instincts here as they look to overcome a pretty well organised Reading defence in their own backyard if they’re to progress to the Championship play-off final as they missed their chance for a lead in last week’s 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.
However, The Cottagers pulled off perhaps the hardest ‘three-card trick’ in their run-in at the end of the Championship regular season with three away wins on the trot at Norwich City, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday – the latter two clubs also being involved in the play-offs.
With this impressive run of recent wins on the road, I fancy Fulham won’t be daunted by their trip to Reading this evening, especially with goalscoring midfielders Cairney (13 goals) and Johansen (11 goals) supporting Martin (10 goals) up front.
This tie really could go either way now, but my choice is for both teams to score here as they chase the win.
