The 2.Bundesliga/3.Liga play-offs start on Friday night with the third tier side, Regensburg, holding home advantage for the first leg at their Continental Arena as they look to cause an upset and gain promotion up to the 2.Bundesliga at the expense of 1860 Munich.
Regensburg finished in third spot in the 3.Liga four points behind runners-up Holsten Kiel, and with a reasonable home record of 10-3-6 32/23 behind them on home turf, and six wins from their last ten at home, Regensburg will be keen to make their home advantage count here this evening.
However, the hosts kept just four clean sheets at home throughout the whole of their 3.Liga campaign, and with the visit of 2.Bundesliga side 1860 Munich, their defence could be severely tested this evening against stronger opposition.
Onto 1860 Munich, and they finished third from bottom in the German second tier following a last day 2-1 defeat away at Heidenheim, and they’ll be kicking themselves as they finished up just one point behind Arminia Bielefeld who gained ‘just’ a point in a 1-1 draw at Dynamo Dresden.
Munich now have to endure a two-legged play-off against the third tier side, Regensburg, and the two legs are sure to be nervy affairs with a lot at stake for both clubs. Munich failed to score on 8 occasions from their 17 away matches during the regular season, while their away record finished up on a poor 3-2-12 13/26.
But 1860 Munich have past history on their side as they’ve won two of the last three encounters with Regensburg (albeit both wins were recorded at home), while two of the last three matches saw both teams score.
I’ll opt for the latter option for this first leg with both defences being susceptible.
