The second round of matches start on Wednesday night in Group A with the hosts, Russia, taking on the Euro 2016 Champions, Portugal, at the Otkrytiye Arena in Moscow and there’s expected to be huge, vocal support for the home side this evening.
Russia currently sit top of the group following their opening 2-0 win over New Zealand, but they’re expected to face much tougher opposition when they take on Portugal tonight. Russia are on a four match unbeaten run prior to this clash as they’ve collected wins over Hungary and New Zealand, along with draws against Belgium and Chile.
This is Russia’s first appearance in the Confederations Cup, courtesy of being the hosts, but they will be reasonably confident as they have beaten Portugal in their last two encounters on home turf in a friendly and World Cup qualifier respectively.
Portugal also look in good shape coming into this encounter as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last eight matches in all competitions, and they took a point from their first match in group A when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mexico.
The Portuguese also look well placed to at least gain a play-off place for next year’s World Cup in Russia as they sit second to Switzerland in Group B, trailing by three points, but there are four matches remaining in the group stages.
In-form Cristiano Ronald is the stand-out player for this Portugal side but he’s well supported by the likes of Quaresma, Moutinho and Silva with Fernando Santos putting together a strong squad for this competition.
Portugal have enough quality to at least avoid defeat to the hosts.
