Salzburg opened their new Austrian season in disappointing fashion as they lost 3-1 away to Sturm Graz in the pening fixture of the new domestic season, but they will have gained a lot of confidence from their subsequent Champions League qualifying win over Partizan Tirana during the week.
Salzburg won the first leg 1-0 away in Albania to take a valuable lead back to their Red Bull Arena for next week’s second leg, but first they’ll be looking to bounce back with a domestic league win over this afternoon’s visitors Wolfsberg.
Salzburg finished last season as Bundesliga title winners with a 9-point lead ahead of second placed Rapid Vienna, and they’ll be keen to extend their unbeaten run on home turf to 18 matches here today. Incidentally, Salzburg beat Wolfsberger 1-0 in their last home match of last season.
Onto Wolfsberg and they also suffered defeat on the opening day of the new season last weekend when they went down 1-0 away at Rheindorf Altach, and they face another tough encounter on the road again this afternoon when they take on reigning champions Salzburg in their own back-yard.
Wolfsberg have now lost their last three Bundesliga matches having previously lost to Admira and Salzburg, while their record away from home has been sub-standard for some time; they finished last season with stats of 2-5-11 8/19 as they struggled to find the back of the net on their travels.
Indeed, they were the lowest goalscorers away from home in the whole division, and they’ll do well to keep pace with the hosts here this afternoon I fancy.
