Sao Paulo will be looking to bounce back from thier disappointing 2-0 loss away at Sport Recife last weekend which has threatened their bid for a Copa Libertadores spot in the Brazilian top flight.
However, the hosts now return to their home ground where they’ve been in pretty steady form and remain unbeaten on home soil. Only Gremio and Sport Recife can also boast unbeaten status at home in Serie A, while Sao Paulo possess an overall home record of 5-2-0 14/5.
Sao Paulo have recorded recent wins over Santos, Gremio and Coritiba along with points against Avai and Fluminense while keeping three clean sheets in the process. The hosts are also unbeaten in their last 13 matches at this level heading into this afternoon’s clash with Cruzeiro.
Onto the visitors then, and Cruzeiro have produced some mixed results in recent weeks having registered home wins over Atletico PR and Goias, but they’ve also gone down to defeats against Gremio and Fluminense which were perhaps telling that they were both inflicted on their travels.
Cruzeiro’s overall away record stands at 2-0-5 7/8 and the indications are not good for the visitors here as they’ve suffered three away defeats on the trot with losses at Coritiba, Gremio and Fluminense (all by 1-0 margins I might add), which has resulted in them currently occupying a bottom half position in Serie A.
Given their loss last weekend (away from home), I fancy the hosts Sao Paulo to be motivated enough to bounce back here this afternoon to kick-start their Copa Libertadores bid in what could perhaps be a low-scoring 1-0 win. Give the quarter ball for extra insurance.
