Sao Paulo will no doubt be keen to return to their Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo (Morumbi) ground this afternoon when they host Fluminense following back-to-back away defeats.
Losses at Palmeiras and Atletico PR have resulted in the hosts dropping down to 7th place, but a win today could lift them up into the Copa Libertadores places again depending upon other results going their way. Visitors Fluminense did what was required of them on Thursday night with a 2-1 home win over lowly Santos to lift them up into third place in the Brazilian top flight. This became their third win on the trot adding to previous wins over Ponte Preta and Goias, and their home form has been very solid indeed so far with four wins and two draws.
Their away form though has been sketchy so far this term as they’ve won two and lost two in their four away matches to date. Despite wins over Flamengo and Goias (who currently reside in the lower reaches of the division), Fluminense have struggled on their travels at top half teams Atletico Mineiro (4-1) and Palmeiras (2-1) in an overall record that reads 2-0-2 7/9.
Along with fourth placed Gremio, Fluminense have lost the most away matches of the teams situated in the top four of Serie A away from home (2) and this could be a telling statistic here tonight.
To sum up, I believe Sao Paulo will bounce back with a 2-1 home win tonight to lift them up into contention among the top teams in the division.
