It’s still early days in the Italian Serie A as the clubs in the top flight continue to sort themselves out, and my next pick features two clubs that I’m expecting to have differing fortunes as the season unfolds.
Looking at the hosts first, and Sassuolo sit just below the mid-table position having won twice in their first five matches of the new campaign which were victories recorded against Palermo away from home and a 2-0 home win over Genoa last time out at their Stadio Città del Tricolore.
Sassuolo’s start therefore seems a little sketchy at this stage, but dig a bit deeper and you’ll find that they’ve lost just twice in their last ten Serie A matches on home turf, which also includes a 1-1 draw against tonight’s visitors Udinese. But wins also registered against Hellas Verona, Inter Milan and Genoa should give them confidence this evening.
Visitors Udinese have also made a mixed start to their new Serie A campaign as they too have registered two wins from their first five matches; a 2-0 home win over Empoli was followed by a 1-0 win away at AC Milan, but have since stumbled in their last two matches.
Despite having home advantage at their Dacia Arena in their last two matches in the Italian top flight, they were dealt a 2-1 defeat by Chievo and then could only muster a point against Fiorentina in an entertaining 2-2 draw, so confidence won’t be high for this afternoon’s trip to Sassuolo.
Away from home, Udinese have really struggled on their travels as they’ve registered just three wins on the road from their last 15 matches in Serie A, and prior to their recent win at Milan, they had gone 11 matches without a win.
