Scunthorpe United moved top of League One last weekend after they beat Bury 2-1 away at Gigg Lane which extended their unbeaten run to six matches with today’s hosts looking for a swift return to the Championship.
Recent wins over Southend United, Shrewsbury Town, Walsall and the aforementioned Bury have helped lift The Iron up into top spot in League One where they hold a three point lead over second placed Bradford City ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash with Northampton Town.
Scunthorpe also still remain unbeaten at their Glanford Park ground where they hold an overall record of 3-2-0 14/3 which also includes three clean sheets so far, and they hold an impressive record on home turf as they’ve now put together a 17 match unbeaten run at home in League One.
Visitors Northampton Town have returned some mixed results in recent weeks having registered wins over Walsall, Southend United and Swindon Town, but have also suffered defeats to Chesterfield and Bristol Rovers, and they face a tricky trip to Scunthorpe this afternoon.
Northampton’s only away success so far this season was a recent 3-1 win at Swindon Town against a side that currently occupy a lowly 20th spot in the English third tier, so todays trip to Scunthorpe represents a real test of their character and where they sit in terms of ability on their travels.
With an away record of 1-3-1 6/6 I’m cautious about covering the draw here as Scunthorpe should have enough to at least avoid defeat but Northampton are a stubborn unit at the best of times and a top five clash here may be closer than we think.
