From West Yorkshire to Sevilla, that’s the beauty of football! – next up is a Champions League pick from Tuesday night’s games with hosts Sevilla taking on French outfit Lyon in Group H as Sevilla look to build upon their encouraging point away at Italian champions Juventus in matchday one.
Sevilla earned what could be a valuable point in Italy as they held the hosts to a 0-0 draw, and they now return to their Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán for tonight’s encounter against Lyon on matchday two of the Champions League.
Although Sevilla were handed a 3-1 defeat away at Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on the weekend, I daresay one eye was on this fixture tonight, and the hosts had previously put together a six-match unbeaten run which included wins over Espanyol, Las Palmas and Real Betis.
Visitors Lyon were also handed a defeat away at Lorient in the French Ligue 1 on the weekend as they too seemed to have more of a focus in this lucrative elite european competition where they made a good start on matchday one with a resounding 3-0 home win over Dynamo Zagreb in their opening Group H fixture.
However, Lyon have managed just one away win from their last five matches overall which was a 3-0 win away at Nancy in Ligue 1 but it should be noted that Nancy currently sit second from bottom in the domestic French top flight, and tonight’s opponents Sevilla will be a vastly different prospect.
Lyon did manage a win in their last away match in the Champions League with a victory at Valencia, but again, Valencia are not the side they once were and are still recovering from their disappointing tenure of pretend manager Gary Neville.
