Shakhtar Donetsk will need to negotiate their way through this third qualifying round of the Champions League against Swiss side Young Boys if they’re to progress through to the group stages.
Shakhtar ended last season’s Ukrainian domestic season runners-up to Dinamo Kiev who were seven points ahead of them at the end of the regular season, but tonight’s hosts got their new Ukraine Premier League campaign off to a blistering start on the weekend when they beat Zirka 4-1 at home.
They’ll return to their Donbass Arena for tonight’s first leg against Young Boys as they seek another tilt at the group stages in this competition and try to improve upon their last showing where they recorded just the one win which was a 4-0 home win over Malmo.
Young Boys finished in second place in the Swiss Super League but some 14 points adrift of title winners Basel, so they too need to qualify via this third round qualifying tie as they prepare for a tough challenge away in Ukraine tonight.
Young Boys also started their new domestic season with a 2-0 win away at St Gallen in the Super League, but this road trip promises to be a totally different prospect as they look to keep the hosts quiet in this opening leg in order to take something back to Bern next week.
Young Boys have relatively little history in this competition, but they’ve lost three of their four away matches played so far in the Champions League but they did manage a 1-0 win away at Fenerbahce back in 2010.
