Shakhtar Donetsk will be looking to register a third win on the trot in all competitions tonight when they face Rapid Vienna in the Champions League Play Off second leg tie, holding a 1-0 lead from last week’s encounter.
Shakhtar won the away leg in Vienna 1-0 thanks to a goal from Brazilian midfielder Marlos, and they’ll no doubt be looking to finish the job here this evening to progress onto the group stages of the competition.
Shakhtar also won away from home in their domestic Premier League at the weekend when they registered a 3-0 win at Arsenal Kiev which has maintained their position near the top of the division.
Visitors Rapid Vienna have it all to do in the Ukraine tonight as they look to overhaul the one-goal deficit that currently faces them if they’re to make it to the group stages. The Austrian outfit did exactly that in the last round as they ran out 5-4 winners on aggregate against Ajax as they took the second leg 3-2 away in Holland which raised a few eyebrows.
On the domestic front, Rapid Vienna currently sit top of the Austrian Bundesliga with a two-point cushion over second placed Admira, having won five of their first six matches of the season which includes the 3-0 win at the weekend at home to Grodig.
But a tougher opponent lies in store for the visitors tonight and it remains to be seen if Rapid Vienna can replicate the feat they achieved at Ajax tonight, particularly when you consider they lost their previous four away matches in this competition on the trot.
To sum up, I believe Shakhtar can get the job done tonight, but I’ll also back both teams to score in what could be a 2-1 home win for Shakhtar Donetsk.
