Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to put some daylight between themselves and fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic when the two teams clash at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon with a valuable three points up for grabs, even at this early stage of the season.
Since registering a 1-0 home win over Aston Villa on the opening day of the new Championship season, The Owls have failed to win any of their last four league matches as they’ve been beaten by Burton Albion away from home, and suffered a local derby defeat to Leeds United.
However, I’m not too concerned by local derby results as they can quite easily go either way, and as Sheffield Wednesday have gained points on the road so far with draws at Norwich City and Brentford in 0-0 and 1-1 draws respectively, they stand a good chance of getting something at home today.
Visitors Wigan Athletic slumped to back-to-back defeats just before the international break as they went down to a 4-3 defeat to Nottingham Forest and a 1-0 loss at home to QPR. They’ll have to travel to Yorkshire on Saturday to take on Sheffield Wednesday who are just one league place and a single point above them in the Championship table.
Wigan have actually registered just two league wins from their last 14 matches in the English second tier overall, which were both gained at their DW Stadium with wins over Brighton and Blackburn Rovers, but their form generally has been poor since being relegated from the Premier League.
The Latics are also without an away win from their last six trips, and indeed have lost five of these matches, so their away form has also been very ordinary.
