Slovenia have a mountain to climb on Tuesday night despite being back in Ljubljana for tonight’s second leg in front of their home crowd as they prepare to overhaul a two-goal deficit against Ukraine.
All-out attack appears to be Slovenia’s best chance of scoring the necessary three goals to have a chance of qualifying for France 2016 whilst balancing attack with solid defence as they also require a clean sheet here this evening. Prior to the 2-0 defeat in Ukraine on Saturday, Slovenia had registered wins over Estonia and San Marino along with a 1-1 draw against Lithuania.
But their opposition is stronger tonight (as was shown in the first leg) and previous strong opposition has also accounted for the Slovenians as they lost 3-2 to England and 3-2 against Switzerland earlier this year.
Visitors Ukraine have one foot in the European Championships next year already having registered a vital 2-0 win in Kiev, and they know they don’t have to take too many unnecessary risks in tonight’s second leg.
The onus will be on Slovenia to attack and this may well create opportunities for Ukraine to hit them on the counter, knowing just one more goal is likely to kill off the hosts in this tie. Ukraine have recently chalked up wins over Belarus, Macedonia and Slovenia along with a draw in Slovakia.
In fact, Ukraine have lost just twice in their last 13 matches in all competitions (which were home and away defeats to Spain in the group matches), and they’re unbeaten in their last three away from home.
Again, I’ll be keeping the draw on my side here tonight, but I do fancy Ukraine to perhaps nick the vital third goal in what could be a 1-0 win for the visitors.
