Just a few seasons ago, Southampton wouldn’t even have dreamed of being involved in european football as they languished in the English third tier in League One, but here we are with The Saints taking on Inter Milan in Group K of the Europa League at St Marys Stadium on Thursday night!
But Southampton head into tonight’s Europa League clash on the back of a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea on the weekend and they’ll be looking to bounce back with a win here this evening which could see them overtake Slavia Prague at the top of the group.
Southampton have registered a win, draw and a loss so far in Group K as they’ve seen off the group leaders Prague already in a 3-0 home win, while a point at Hapoel Be’er Sheva and defeat at tonight’s opponents Inter Milan have been their returns so far on their travels.
Visitors Inter Milan were also handed a defeat in their respective domestic Serie A on the weekend as they fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Sampdoria, while their form in this Europa League competition hasn’t been that great in recent times.
The Italian outfit have managed to record just two wins in this competition from their last eight matches played, which, incidentally, were both registered at home with wins over Celtic and Southampton respectively, but their away form has been pretty average.
Five away matches without a win for Inter Milan tells its own story as they’ve lost at Wolfsburg and Sparta Prague in their last two on their travels at this level, along with previous draws at Qarabag, Saint Etienne and Celtic.
