Haig Avenue is the venue of my next pick with hosts Southport taking on Cheltenham Town with a valuable three points up for grabs for both teams who find themselves at opposite ends of the National League.
Southport currently sit in the relegation places, third from bottom and four points adrift of Boreham Wood although they’ve recently secured wins away from home at Woking and Kidderminster. It’s interesting to note though, that these recent wins were against two very out-of-form sides who have each picked up just 5 points from their last six matches.
In addition, Southport are without a win from their last six on home turf while their overall home record stands at 1-3-5 8/16, a sequence which includes defeats to Grimsby Town, Torquay United and Chester in recent weeks.
Visitors Cheltenham Town currently sit top of the National League with a one-point margin over second placed Forest Green Rovers thanks to a 5-0 thumping of Guiseley during the week which extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.
Within this seven-match unbeaten run, Cheltenham have been dominant against the ‘lesser’ sides of the division with a 7-1 win at Halifax and the 5-0 win over Guiseley while possessing a solid record away at bottom half opposition with stats of 3-1-1 13/4 as the goals have continued to flow.
Wright, Waters, Morgan-Smith and Munns have all chipped in with important goals for The Robins and they should collectively have too much quality for Southport this afternoon.
To sum up, I’ll back Cheltenham Town to take all three points in perhaps a 2-1 win for the visitors.
