Sport Recife continued their impressive start to the new Brazilian Serie A season last weekend with a 2-1 home win over Joinville which lifted them up into third spot in the early league table.
They have another home match this afternoon against a lacklustre Vasco da Gama outfit who currently sit second from bottom in Serie A with just three points to their name. Meanwhile, Sport are enjoying their fantastic start to the new campaign, not least at home where they’ve racked up four wins on the trot.

Despite an unbeaten start to the new season with draws against Goias, Figueirense and Internacional respectively, they’ve since slumped to four defeats on the trot which has contributed to their current poor league position.
Defeats to Atletico Mineiro, Ponte Preta, Atletico PR and last weekend’s 3-1 capitulation at home to Cruzeiro will have done nothing for their confidence, particularly away from home where they hold an overall record of 0-1-2 0/5 along with failing to score on their travels to date.
In fact, Vasco have failed to score in five of their last six on the road, along with failing to win in their last thirteen away matches at this level.
The momentum definitely appears to be with the hosts and with confidence behind them, I’ll back the hosts for perhaps a 1-0 win here this afternoon to continue their good run of form.
