It’s still early days in the Belgian Jupiler League but Standard Liege play host to top of the table outfit Oostende at their Stade Maurice Dufrasne ground on Sunday night with the hosts looking to extend their 100% home record.
Standard Liege currently sit in 7th place in the Belgian top flight on the back of two home wins on the trot, but they’d have been placed higher had their away results been better; a defeat at Kortrijk 2-1 and a 1-1 draw last time out away at Mouscron-Peruwelz have prevented them from being among the top teams in the division thus far.
But that could all change tonight if they register a third successive home win following earlier wins over Zulte-Waregem 2-1 and Waasland-Beveren 1-0 to give them an early impressive home record of 2-0-0 3/1. Incidentally, Standard Liege have won their last five on the trot at home, and have indeed won 12 of their last 13 home matches.
Visitors Oostende are the surprise table toppers of the Belgian Jupiler League albeit the league being still in its infancy, but particularly as Oostende finished in the bottom half of the division at the end of last season.
Oostende’s current standing is thanks largely to a home record that also stands at 100% following three home wins on the trot over Mechelen, Westerlo and Anderlecht as they’ve taken full advantage of a handy fixture schedule which has had them play three home matches in their first four games of the season.
This evening will be their biggest test yet though as they come up against a strong Standard Liege outfit who have also impressed at home so far in this new campaign.
The odds are good for a home win and I believe Standard Liege can do the business here, winning this perhaps 2-1.
