Icelandic outfit, Stjarnan, will be reasonably confident that they can get a result in their Europa League first qualifying round first leg at home to Shamrock Rovers at their Samsung völlurinn on Thursday night despite some recent disappointing results on the domestic front.
Stjarnan had made a good start to their new Urvalsdeild campaign as they racked up four wins from their first five league matches, but have since slumped to three defeats from their last four matches overall with defeats to FH, Vikingur Reykjavik and Vikingur Olafsvik.
Stjarnan’s form on home turf though has been generally consistent as they’ve suffered just two defeats from their last 13 matches in all competitions, and they’ve won three of their four Europa League ties to date at home with wins over Bangor City, Motherwell and Lech Poznan, all of which were three years ago.
Visitors Shamrock Rovers currently sit in fourth place in the Republic of Ireland Premier Division and they come into this important Europa League first leg clash having registered three wins from their last four matches on the domestic scene, with wins over Bray Wanderers, Finn Harps and Drogheda United.
However, away from home, Shamrock Rovers have struggled a little as they’ve lost 6 of their 9 matches on their travels, and a trip to Iceland may well test them to their limits on Thursday night.
In addition, Shamrock Rovers have failed to win any of their last six away matches in the Europa League, losing four of these matches. The second leg at their Tallaght Stadium therefore appears to be their best chance of progressing through to the next round.
To sum up,I believe Stjarnan have enough quality to at least avoid defeat here.
