Had it not been for a four-match streak without a win in the Premier League recently, Stoke City could be looking at a possible european football qualification spot as they’re still just five points adrift of Manchester United who occupy the Europa League spot.
However, Stoke City bounced back with a win last time out as they secured all three points in a 3-1 victory away at Bournemouth, and with the visit of rock-bottom Aston Villa at the Britannia Stadium, Stoke will be eyeing off another win this afternoon which could lift them up into 8th place in the English top flight.
The Potters’ overall home record stands at an even 5-2-5 13/13 and although their record at against bottom half teams stands at a below-par 2-0-4 6/10, this record can be improved upon against Villa today.
Visitors Aston Villa were trashed 6-0 at Villa Park in their last Premier League match by erratic Liverpool, and they now have to go back out on the road with a tricky trip to Stoke in the offing as the midlanders look to make an unlikely escape from the drop zone.
Villa have won just once away from home all season in what has been a wretched campaign for them so far, while their overall away record stands at a poor 1-3-9 10/26 with three defeats from their last four with losses at Norwich City, Sunderland and West Ham.
It is not a good sign that they’ve lost to fellow relegation rivals Norwich and Sunderland, so although Stoke have stumbled in recent weeks, I reckon The Potters can take the points here today.
