Sunderland v Swansea Betting Tip – 2 (Draw no bet) – 27 September 2014

Premier League Tips

Although they remain winless, Sunderland have tasted defeat just once in five Premier League games. Gus Poyet’s men have drawn at home against Manchester United and Tottenham whist taking a point each from West Brom and Burnley. Having managed to score more than one goal in a game just once, it’s apparent where they need to improve if they are to turn some of those solitary points into three. Having narrowly survived relegation last season with an impressive end to the campaign, their fans had hoped they would progress from that and be competing higher up the table. That’s not been the case yet, and it will only improve if they can start creating more chances in their games.

When Michael Laudrup left Swansea last season, many thought that their Premier League status would be in danger. Somebody forgot to tell Gary Monk that, however, as the former Swans captain led them to safety with something to spare before beginning this season in a very positive manner. An opening day win over United at Old Trafford was the perfect platform to go on and win their next two league games. They have stalled somewhat late with two consecutive defeats, firstly away to Chelsea and then last week when hosting Southampton. Another blow from that match was the sending off of Wilfried Bony who will miss this weekend’s match.

Failing to sign Fabio Borini on a permanent deal looks to have been a huge blow for Sunderland’s fortunes this year. Even though the Italian forward is not everybody’s cup of tea, he provided Sunderland with a bigger threat than they have at the moment. Steven Fletcher, Jose Altidore and Connor Wickham have all had the opportunity under Poyet but none of them have shown they will be prolific at this level. Altidore did manage to score in the League Cup defeat to Stoke in midweek and could get the call to start on Saturday.

Due to Bony’s suspension, summer signing Bafetimbi Gomis is likely to start in his place. Gomis has yet to score for his new club but he was a handful for the Everton defence on Wednesday in the League Cup and suits the system that Monk likes to play. That system was used to great effect as they thrashed the Merseysiders 3-0 at a rain-soaked Liberty Stadium to advance. They must now transfer some of that form in their away games, starting on Saturday.

These two have enjoyed contrasting fortunes in the early part of the season and the home side, especially will be wanting to improve on what they have done so far. Swansea will be eager to get back to winning ways in the league as well, though, after back to back losses. Sunderland are not showing enough to warrant their tag as favourites in this game, which is why Swansea ‘draw no bet’ is the call here.
